We are seeking a professional with at least five years of experience with an emphasis on grantsmanship, major gifts, corporate fundraising, and event planning. An entrepreneurial sensibility, strong management skills and strategic fundraising experience is preferred. Bachelor's degree required. This position reports directly to the Executive Director. AFC is a not-for-profit organization in New York City with a mission to ensure that all children have access to quality public education. AFC pursues this goal with five key strategies: direct representation of individual children and parents, community education, public policy advocacy, litigation, and information dissemination about the public schools. Senior writer/Editor for New Media NEW!Insideschools.org, a project of Advocates for Children of New York, seeks a senior writer/editor with experience in new media. Insideschools, a 2000 page Web site, is a popular free, online guide to New York City public schools. The site features reviews of every public school and provides information to help parents navigate the NYC public school system. Insideschools also sends out bi-monthly e-mail news alerts and maintains a blog.
Applicants should have experience working with interactive Web sites and other new media. We are seeking someone to help develop the vision and future of Insideschools. Tasks will include writing school profiles, assigning, editing and rewriting copy, including editing a bi-monthly news alert. The ideal applicant also will be able to create and integrate new Web features. The individual will help to develop interactive sections of the site, and do outreach to schools, parents and community members to promote citizen journalism and contributions from the public.

AFC is a non-profit organization that works in partnership with our city's poorest and most vulnerable families to help their children succeed in school and to advocate on behalf of all New York City students for access to an equal and quality public education. InsideSchools.org provides up-to-date, meaningful, independent information on NYC schools for parents and others with an interest in the school system. The site's small staff independently reviews over 1,500 New York City public and charter schools and makes important information on the school department's policies and practices accessible to the public. The grant writer is responsible for developing/adapting proposals so that they are marketable to funders. He/she conducts research on potential funders, maintains an awareness of donor activities, writes the proposals, and works with AFC staff to edit the proposals to the stage of submission. Part-time Education Specialist Advocates For Children (AFC) is a New York City not-for-profit organization whose mission is to ensure that all children have access to a quality public education. AFC's work combines five strategies, including direct representation of children and parents, community education, public policy, class action litigation and information dissemination about the public schools. AFC works on behalf of children and youth who are at greatest risk of academic failure due to poverty, ethnicity, disability, homelessness, immigration status/limited English proficiency, involvement in the child welfare or juvenile justice systems, domestic violence, sexual orientation, or teen parenting. AFC currently seeks a part-time Education Specialist to work on our Foster Care Project. The Project provides advocacy and legal services to families involved with the child welfare system whose children are experiencing school-related difficulties. The Education Specialist, under the supervision of an attorney, will assist clients with a wide range of educational issues including problems relating to truancy, literacy, learning disabilities, and emotional and behavioral disorders. The Specialist also will work closely with several preventive services and foster care agencies to improve their capacity to address the educational needs of the students they serve. Responsibilities will include: working closely with child welfare professionals, students and families to obtain appropriate educational services; conducting client interviews; providing case management to families; assisting clients with school admissions; advocating for students at meetings and school visits; conducting workshops for parents, young people and professionals; and assisting with project development, policy work and legislative initiatives to support increased access to education for students involved with the child welfare system. Experience working directly with at-risk families or demonstrated commitment to public interest required. Familiarity with the New York City public schools, special education law and bilingual ability English/Spanish preferred. Part-time basis, roughly 24 hours per week, and flexible schedule. EOE.
