Special Education Questions

Section Three - What are the different programs included within Special Education?

3. What are the different programs included within Special Education?

Do special education programs vary from district to district?

Yes. In every district there must be a “continuum of alternative placements” available to special education students, ranging from general education classes with supports and services, self-contained classes within regular schools, special schools, to instruction at home, in hospitals or residential institutions. In practice, however, the components of the continuum vary widely from district to district. Districts may agree, however, to educate children outside their local school district if the appropriate program is not available within district.

How do I find out about the services provided in my district?

To find out about the special education services provided in your school district, consult your child’s principal or call the district office to request information.
