Christiana's Story

christiana

Christiana was identified as having a language-based learning disability in elementary school, and though she had an Individualized Education Program (IEP), her schools repeatedly failed to provide appropriate reading instruction to meet her learning needs. As a result, despite her grandmother’s repeated requests for help, Christiana was reading at only a second-grade level when she came to AFC as a seventh grader. AFC quickly worked to find Christiana a new school that could provide intensive reading remediation and specialized support.

With the assistance of pro bono attorneys at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP, we secured Christiana’s placement at Mary McDowell, a school that serves students with learning disabilities, for eighth grade. Christiana thrived at Mary McDowell, finally receiving the individualized instruction and support she needed to make academic progress. With AFC’s continued assistance securing tuition, Christiana was able to attend Mary McDowell for all of high school, graduating in June 2015! We are so proud of all of her accomplishments: she maintained an "A" average throughout her senior year and, as part of a project for Girl Scouts, organized a panel of speakers on learning disabilities to share her own story and let other families know that help is available. Christiana is now headed to Medgar Evers Community College, where she plans to major in education.
