  • Expansion of preschool special education programs at risk as stimulus dollars dry up

    01.19.2023 | NY Daily News | That program is one of more than a dozen critical education initiatives that are vulnerable to cutbacks or elimination after the temporary funding runs out and the city hits a so-called fiscal cliff, according to a brief from Advocates for Children released Thursday. 

    Those include more spots in free summer enrichment programs, and hundreds of new social workers and nurses. Support for students with dyslexia, living in homeless shelters, and learning English as a new language are also underwritten by the time-sensitive funds. 

    “We need our elected leaders to start planning now,” said Executive Director Kim Sweet in a statement, “so that in fall of 2024, schools are not forced to excess social workers and other critical staff, and students who rely on theseprograms do not have the rug pulled out from under them.” Read article
