Who We Are

Alex's Story

Alex's Story

Alex, a bright and determined high school student, was thrown out of her home by her mother. When her high school guidance counselor became aware of the situation, he called the child abuse hotline. Child welfare officials contacted Alex’s mother and told her that she must take Alex back. However, as soon as Alex turned eighteen, her mother again threw her out of the house.  Still in high school and now homeless, Alex alternated between staying with her aunt, her grandmother, and staying with various friends.

Despite Alex’s challenging living situation, she graduated from high school and was accepted into college. However, when Alex applied for financial aid in order to attend college, she was unable to secure her mother’s financial information and the financial aid office would not process her application. Thankfully, Alex called Advocates for Children of New York (AFC)’s NYS-TEACHS and our staff was able to get verification that proved Alex was a homeless, unaccompanied youth.  The financial aid office was therefore able to offer her the financial aid she needed to pursue her college education.

Alex wrote, “Thank you soooooooooooo much! My aunt and I have been going in huge circles with this stuff [for months]. We really appreciate everything you’ve done to help me. I really cannot wait to start college.”
